35 St. Paul's Cathedral - "It is a matter of great regret that the old Registers of St. Paul's Cathedral are not at present in existence. There does not seem to be any account of them, so it is most probable that they were burnt at the Great Fire. With regard to the present Registers, there are only four entries of Baptisms—1708 to 1715—till the modern ones begin in 1875-1897. The Marriages commence in 1697 ; the earliest on December 5th, three days after the new Cathedral was opened for Divine Service, and they continue till 1754, when the Marriage Act of 1753 came into force. Two occur in 1756 and 1758, and then there are no more till 1877, since which time there have been only five, and those by special arrangement. We do not come upon many celebrated names, but as the marriages were chiefly by licence, they seem to be of persons of a higher class of life than is found in most of the City churches. The earliest Burial in the Vaults is in 1766. There is no entry of the famous architect Sir Christopher Wren, who was buried in 1723, and there are not many entries of important persons till 1806, when the great Lord Nelson was carried to his grave. Since then we have a most distinguished list up to 1899" - 228 pages
