Being A Transcript Of The original Hearth Tax Returns For The Several Wards And Suberbs Of Leicester For Michaelmas 1664: Taken From The Exchequer Lay Subsidy Rolls. It supplies us with a kind of census or directory of the town two-and-a-half centuries ago, and furnishes us with a complete list of named householders, rich and poor, of every occupied dwelling, together with the number of fire-hearths for which each were taxed. Leicester at that period contained something like 892 houses (only three being unoccupied), a total of about 1,810 hearths, and an estimated population of about 3,500 inhabitants.
